Although there are prescription drugs and natural supplements available for trading dog arthritis, there are steps that every dog owner should know about that can be taken to help ease the symptoms of this condition.  I’ll outline below the most important of these steps.

First of all, owners of dogs with arthritis should never allow their pets to become overweight.  It’s far better and far more healthy for a dog suffering from arthritis to be more on the thin side than to have to carry any extra weight.  The extra weight ads added stress to the joints which have been damaged by the condition of arthritis.  This added weight and stress is unnecessary and can be highly detrimental to the dog’s will being.

I realize it is difficult sometimes to put older dogs on a diet but for those suffering from canine arthritis is extremely important to maintain a proper and healthy weight.  If weight gain is a problem which can’t seem to be managed be sure and talk with your vet about alternative foods or ideas they may have in order to keep the canines wait down.

Next, make sure that your dog gets plenty of healthy exercise.  Not too much and not too little is very important.  In order to remain helping the joints of any dog need proper exercise.  The best way to exercise a dog with arthritis is to take them on long walks.  A lot of walk begins on the age of the dog in the severity of the arthritis condition.  If the dog is not used to taking long walks, break them in slowly by going on short ones for several weeks.  Doing such things as playing ball and other activities which require jumping or rapid side to side movement is not advised.  Our old dog Katie, even though she is 16 years old, still believes she is a copy at times.  She will end up hurting herself by playing too hard if we are not careful.  This can affect her arthritis in concert to end up limping for several days.

Lastly, make sure your old dog suffering from the arthritis condition has a cozy place to sleep.  I’ll dogs enjoy a soft comfortable bed just like people do as they age.  Hard floors are not comfortable to sleep on for any of us who are aging.  Good quality dog beds can be purchased at pet supply stores or ordered online.  Additionally, in colder climates make sure that your older dogs are kept warm.  Cold weather can severely affect the symptoms of dogs suffering from arthritis.

Although there is no cure for arthritis in dogs is possible to ease the suffering and pain may endure.  When you suspect your older dog is suffering from arthritis always have him or her checked by the vet.  Take his suggestions for a supplements that may help your dog but also follow the three steps I outlined above in order to keys the pain of canine arthritis.
